When looking to purchase a home, take a look at Home-Star Inspection Services. Getting a home inspection is a good idea. We take a look at 300 to 400 items including all major components of the home. An inspection for a 2,000 square foot home takes around two hours, sometimes longer due to the age of the home. By being present during the inspection, you can learn lots of helpful tips on maintaining your property.

Following is a list of what we look for during the inspection:

	Roof	Condition of shingles on the roof Signs of cracking or pitting Staining or leaking around chimney or valleys Stains on roof from moisture in attic or bathroom exhaust fan Installation of rafters or trusses in attic Insulation levels and venting provisions
	Exterior	Dents in siding or any signs of decay at lower edge Areas that need to be caulked or painted General maintenance on windows and doors Grading provisions to divert water away from structure Gutters and extensions are in place Construction of decks and railings for safety Stairs and stoop have sufficient hand rails
	Concrete Work	Cracks in concrete and signs of any settling Pitted or face lifting areas due to salt off cars in winter
	Interior Elements	Window and door operations Cracks and chips in plaster Squeaks in floors due to age Railings and spindles for proper height and spacing for safety Smoke detectors checked for proper operations
	Kitchen and Bath	Check for leaks at faucets or traps under sinks Cuts in floor or counter tops Chips in sinks, toilet and bath tubs Water pressure at fixtures Check if areas are protected with the GFCI outlets
	Electrical	Check capacity of panel Check for circuit taps in panel Are plates and covers missing on outlets, switches or junction boxes
	Cooling Units	Is unit kept clean at exterior on outside of the unit Is unit cooling properly or in need of maintenance
	Heating Unit	Check heat exchanger, blower, burners for proper operations Show client where filters need to be changed Check all units: furnace, water heater, dryer Check for any signs for gas leaks
	Fireplace	Check fire box for cracks or splits Check damper operation and creosote cleaning Check gas ignites if pilot is lit
	Sub-Structures	Check floor framing, beams, jack post, or columns Cracks in foundation walls, sump pump, floor drains Signs of water penetration at base of walls How to correct finish materials for decay at base Proper railing on stairs for children
	Plumbing	Water piping Drain and vent piping fixture draining Look for leaking or stains under fixtures in basement Look for improper drain hookups to sewer line water shutoffs from street
	Water Heater	Vent piping whether there are signs of rust at lower edges of units Has proper discharge piping Show client how to flush unit to extend life expectancy Check temperature on water lines
